Skins game12/10/2023 Course handicap is specific to the golf course you are playing on, while handicap index is a measure of a player’s potential ability across all courses. Personally, we like the last and may try it out ourselves. It’s important to note that there are different types of handicaps, including course handicap and handicap index. Another explanation, and perhaps the craziest of the bunch, comes from an old Scottish legend that claims furriers who arrived in Scotland took to the golf links and gambled with their pelts (or skins), and the name stuck. The second source – the USGA library to be exact – says that Skins is probably a simplified version for “syndicates” for which the game is known in other parts of the country. ![]() The first, and most logical, is that some believe the Skins betting game arose from an old slang term for a one dollar bill. But there are a few commonly offered explanations. Great question and honestly, there’s no definitive answer. So, go for the big bird and the big payday that comes with it. Plenty of golfers will birdie a par 5, but far fewer will make an eagle. The second betting tip is to never lay up on a par 5. Every golfer has the same chance to hit it close because everyone is teeing off from the same spot, so capitalize on the opportunity to write a 2 on your scorecard. The first betting tip is to focus your attention on the par 3s. But there are a few golf betting tips we can offer to maximize your chances. There’s no secret sauce to winning big at Skins, the more birdies and eagles you make the greater your chances are for winning a Skin. Play at your own risk as this version frays both the nerves and taxes the beer-sodden brain. This cycle continues throughout all 18 golf holes. If the golfer fails to validate the Skin, it may be “stolen” by the player with the lowest score on the validation hole however, the pressure is now on that golfer the win the following hole to earn both the stolen Skin and the Skin for the hole. The second variation of Skins is called “validation.” If the group decides to enact validation, a golfer who wins a Skin must validate that win by making the lowest score on the next hole (ties permitted). The first variation calls for groups to play the first six holes at one Skins value, the next six holes at an increased value, and the final six holes at an even higher value (talk about raising the stakes). There are a few variations that can add a fun twist to any “friendly’ Skins game. ![]() The first golfer will get $144 while the other two golfers get $48. If one golfer earns three Skins and two golfers earn one Skin, that’s five total Skins, so the pot is split five ways, making the value of each Skin $48. If three different golfers earn one Skin, then each of the three will get $80. Hint: Multi-foursome scoring is a no-brainer using the 18Birdies App.įor example, if 12 golfers paid into the Skins pot then a total of $240 is up for grabs. Once all the Skins are discovered, the total pot is divided by the number of Skins won and paid out accordingly. Remember, there are no ties in Skins so a hole can only be won when a unique low score among the group is found. After the final golfer holes out on 18, the groups get together – we suggest at the 19th hole where everyone’s a winner – to settle up the bets. Everyone plays not knowing if their score on a hole will win a Skin, which encourages aggressive play and exciting outcomes. In a whole pot Skins game, golfers pay into a pot before the round begins, say $5 to $20 per player. ![]() Whole pot Skins is an excellent way for larger golf outings to enjoy post-round drama. So, drain that birdie putt already, would ya! For example, if six holes in-a-row are halved, then you’ll play for some serious cash on the seventh hole. Holes continue to carry over until there is an outright winner. It’s important to note that in Skins there are no ties, so the value of the hole (usually $1 or $5 if you’re feeling like a high roller) carries over to the next hole.įor example, if Golfer A and Golfer B halve (or tie) any hole, the next hole is now worth two skins ($2 in a $1 Skins game). The first type of Skins game is scored like match play, with the lowest score (either the net score if handicaps are involved, gross score when they aren’t, or both) winning each hole. But first things first, you’ve got to know how to play Skins if you want to win them. The next time you and your buddies tee it up, give Skins a shot and watch the drama unfold. So, unlike some other games, each hole can create serious pressure. ![]() In Skins, every golf hole is its own match, with the lowest score winning the hole. Skins is one of the most popular golf betting games among players of all skill levels, from the weekend warrior to the pros looking for a little motivation during their practice rounds. Transplanting basil seedlings12/10/2023 ![]() I water every 2-3 days (this primarily varies depending on temperature and if a fan is being used which would dry them out more quickly). If you feel some moisture, then you should be okay. If it is dry, give it a turkey baste of water. You can do this by placing the back of your finger on the surface. Moisture: Ensure that the seedling mix is moist.Temperature: Ensure it is at least 20C/70F in your seed starting station. If none of your basil seeds have come through the surface yet, the two things you want to check on are: Basil germination generally takes anywhere from 6-14 days, so it's not uncommon for there to not be any seedlings coming through the surface on Day 7. If your seeds have not germinated, don't be alarmed. DAY 7: BASIL GERMINATION (6-14 days)Īs we check in here on Day 7, we can see that we have several basil seeds that have successfully germinated and are beginning to grow! Over the coming 7 days, simply leave the seed cells underneath the grow light in that warm environment, and provide them a baste of water every 2-3 days. If you've finished these steps, then you're well on your way to having thriving basil this season! This will ensure that the seedling mix stays moist and that the seeds successfully germinate. Provide them 1x turkey baste of water every 2-3 days.Move them under a grow light in an area that is at least 20C/70F. ![]() Once you have finished those steps, your basil seeds need a warm and moist environment to germinate. Cover with 1cm of Worm Castings Seedling Mix.Partly because they're so small, but also partly because I notice as lightly lower germination rate with them than other plants such as Kale, Tomatoes, and Cucumbers. Normally we would add 5 seeds per plant we want, but with Basil I like to add 10 seeds. You'll want to fill a Seed Starting cell to 1cm from the top with Worm Castings Seedling Mix.We start our basil seeds the same as the rest of our seeds, which you can see in this video: Let's now get our basil seeds started indoors and start following our basil baby! DAY 0: HOW TO START BASIL SEEDS At this point, there are a number of ways we can easily preserve it through freezing and canning that will allow us to be enjoying delicious pestos (I share my favourite recipe below!) and meals all through the winter. Basil Tip #3 - Preserve: Lastly, if we have properly pruned our basil plant, then we will likely have a great excess of basil at the end of the season. To promote this, there is a specific way to prune basil (full video below on exactly how to prune basil and how simple it is) that will allow the basil plant to multiply its stem and in turn put out exponentially more leaves. Basil Tip #2 - Pruning: Ultimately we want to harvest the basil leaves - therefore, the more leaves the better.Ensure that your Seed Starting Station is at least 20C/70F, and be cautious of transplanting it into the outdoor garden until the average night time low temperature is at least 12C (more on this below). This includes when starting the seeds as well as when transplanting it into the outdoor garden. Basil Tip #1 - Warmth: To grow basil successfully and for it to thrive, it needs to be in a warm environment at all points.Rather than giving you a bunch of scientific basil growing information you might not ever use, I wanted to start by providing my three biggest tips for growing Basil (all of which we go into greater detail on at the appropriate time in the basil growing season): My hope is that this basil growing guide helps you feel comfortable and confident in your Mindful Garden, allowing you to spend more energy simply on enjoying the garden rather than questioning whether or not it's growing properly.Īnd as always, we answer every question we receive so if there's anything you're unsure of or that we don't cover, just leave a comment below and we'll respond to you! THREE KEY TIPS FOR GROWING BASIL This guide is going to take you from the point of starting a basil seed to harvesting it and enjoying it in a delicious meal. So? I decided I'd have to create it myself! Over the years I've come across lots of gardening guides with lots of amazing tips - but always a bit disparate. I could never find a guide that follows a plant's journey from being in a seed pack to harvest and ending up on the dinner table as a delicious meal - and teaches the gardener exactly what to do at every key step along the way. Sipping whiskey for beginners12/10/2023 ![]() A bottle of Aberfeldy-12 Year costs an average of just $44, so if you are ready or curious about Highland single-malts, one of this age, complexity, and price point is a no-brainer. The deep honey sweetness, vibrant citrus notes, and well-rounded malt are all supported and elongated by a subtle smokiness from the re-charred casks. This whisky has everything you love about a classic Highland single-malt, only more potent. This is especially effective and present in the Aberfeldy 12-Year. Another reason is to impart an extra laid of the flavor of charred goodness. ![]() The act of charring aging barrels is done to open up the fibers of the wood so the whisky can penetrate it more deeply, therefore taking on more of its character. Aberfeldy's 12-year-old expression spends its maturation in ex-sherry, ex-bourbon, refill, and re-char casks, the combination of which makes for a whisky bountiful and robust in flavor and silky smooth in every sip. It also ferments its mash longer than other distillers, which intensifies its flavor. It is a well-rounded whisky that is not only a gentle introduction to single-malt and Highland scotch but also one that will help you start to recognize certain flavor notes and characteristics to keep in mind going forward.Īberfeldy makes its scotch whiskies at its distillery in the Central Highlands and has access to its very own water source. Glenmorangie Original 10-Year is a perfect example of this, as its bright character is ripe with notes of honey, citrus, and vanilla from the bourbon cask maturation. The Highland category of scotch is very diverse, as it is the largest region, but while not all Highland scotch tastes the same, these whiskies are generally fruitier and more elegant. This scotch is sure to dispel any preconceived notions of scotch being a harsh, brawny spirit that shoos away delicate, inexperienced palates. ![]() However, Glenmorangie Original 10-Year remains a very affordable, reliable option at an average of $41. Single-malt scotches are widely considered to be the most high-end version of the spirit. They must be made from only one type of malted barley, distilled in copper stills, and produced entirely at one single distillery. With this foundation of scotch knowledge, here are some bottles that can be your access point to the wide and wonderful world of scotch whisky.Īs mentioned earlier, there are multiple qualifications that distinguish a single-malt scotch. Most importantly, how you enjoy scotch is entirely up to your preferences, so do not get caught up in whether to sip it neat, from certain glassware, or whatever so-called connoisseurs say is correct. The regions of scotch are broken down into Lowland, Highland, Speyside, Islay, and Campbeltown, of which correspond to different brands, characteristics, and production methods (more on that later). Scotches also vary based on where they are made. Differentiating them may seem difficult at first, but with more exposure, you will figure out what you like and don't like. Furthermore, scotch whisky is broken into categories of single-malt, single-grain, blended scotch, blended malt, and blended grain. There are plenty of great scotch whiskies available at an affordable price point, as well as expensive ones that are more of a risky investment than a reliable one. First of all, expensive scotch does not automatically mean good scotch. AuthorWrite something about yourself. No need to be fancy, just an overview. ArchivesCategories |
